Board of Education

The Vilonia Board of Education meets at 7 p.m., every second Monday of the month at the administration office. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The Vilonia Board of Education is an elected council that helps to determine educational policy in the school district as well as lead the way regarding building projects. However, the Board also shares the power with the state Department of Education. Members of the Vilonia Board are visible in the community.  They attend school functions; they eat in Vilonia restaurants, bank in Vilonia and shop at the local businesses. They are peers, friends and neighbors. Some have children who attend the school; others have children who have graduated. However, to serve, there is only requirement and that is to work for the betterment of the school district. There’s no monetary pay but there’s wealth in  serving through  knowing one is making a difference.

On the current board, there is variety. There’s experience and new blood. Those with experience serve as sounding boards and even mentors. Those with less experience are able to view business and management issues from different perspectives and draw on knowledge gained from situations encountered.

Current board members include:

Jerry Roberts, board president, has been on the board for about 22 years. Roberts said it is simple why he wants to serve. “I love this school and love the kids and want them to be successful and safe at school.

In the district, Roberts is also known for his school spirit. Retired, he attends all ball games. He’s famous for writing  signature songs and poems for special occasions. Roberts’ daughter is also a teacher in the district.

Randy Sanders, vice-president, has been on the Vilonia board for more than 23 years. He served when the high school and gymnasium were being built in 1994 as well as when the agri building and new primary school and many other facilities were built.

It’s good to have an experienced board, he believes. "I'm experienced. I've been there. I'm familiar with what we have going on, very familiar with the staff and administrators."

Sanders and his wife, Gaye, are both Vilonia High School graduates as well as their two sons.

Sanders has also served in the community in other volunteer capacities such as a coach for peewee basketball and he has coached American Legion baseball.

Scott Newell has served on the board since 2006, about five years. A 1989 Vilonia graduate, he said he loves his community and the school.  “The main reason I decided to try to serve on the school board was to assist the school with maintaining excellence as the school continues to grow,” Newell said. His wife Christy graduated from Vilonia in 1990.  She is a teacher in the district and the couple have two sons attending school in the district.  “Christy and I serve and support the Vilonia schools and community in any way possible,” Newell added.

Mark Samuelson, board disbursement officer,  has served on the board for about 14 years. He moved to Vilonia in 1985. He and his wife Kim have three children who graduated from VHS. He refers to the school as the hub of the community. “It’s a reflection of the community,” he said. “It has given Vilonia a good name. I just want to be involved with that and give back. I love serving the community.”

Mark has held positions in the financial and accounting fields within the construction industry for many years—17 years of which has at his current job.  He also holds a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Accounting and Business Administration from John Brown University.

Martin McKissack, board secretary, grew up in Vilonia and has served on the board for six years. He’s a 1993 VHS alumni. “I wanted to serve on Board of Education as a form of community service and be more involved in my children's education.”

He and his wife Kelly have four children. He wants the best for his children as well as for his friends and neighbors children and for them to have the best education available as well as have an opportunity to be involved in school activities the same as he enjoyed. While in school, he said, he was active in  baseball, basketball, Future Business Leaders of America, Beta Club and Student Council.

Jake Turner began serving in 2010. A life-long resident of Vilonia, he graduated from VHS in 1999. He and his wife Melinda have two children in the district next. While in school, Turner played sports and was involved with FFA. He currently works at UAMS in the IT Department.  Turner said he wants to serve because “I really believe our kids are our future. I want to be there, on the board,  to work and try to make sure the teachers and kids get what they need to succeed. I want to be a part of guiding the future in the Vilonia School District.”

Tim Nolan  is the newest member of the Board. He was seated in Pos. 1, following  the September 2011 election.  He is a business owner and graduated  from Vilonia High School in 1978. His service to the district, he said, is inspired by a desire to help his community. His wife, Toni, is a teacher in the district. Also, he has two children Erin and Zachary.
