Teacher Beverly McGuire lost her battle with cancer today, July 10. She was a great teacher and friend of many of the staff in the Vilonia School District. If you would like to share your memories of Beverly, please send them to me and I will post them as a tribute to her on the school's website. To the family, we are sorry for your loss. She will remain in our hearts. And, know, she changed the lives of many.
I remember Ms. McGuire as my homeroom teacher in the 6th grade. I met one of my good friends, Heath Oakley that year in her class. I will always remember her as a positive, kind hearted, and caring person. I loved being in her class and having her as a energetic and sweet teacher. As an adult, I was able to see her as a colleague when I became a teacher in the Vilonia School District. I still had a difficult time referring to her as Beverly since I only knew her as Ms. McGuire. She would always ask me what my former classmates were up to and how my dad was doing. I am heartbroken to hear of her passing and I know she will be greatly missed. Without a doubt I do know that she has a new body, is no longer suffering, and is walking on the streets of gold in Heaven. She was a woman of God and I looked up to her in many ways as a former student, fellow teacher, and as a Christian. My prayers and thoughts will continue to be with her family in the days ahead. I have to share a Beverly McGuire memory. Seventeen years ago, I was invited to join the red team at the Vilonia Middle School. There, I met some of the finest people, many who have become life-long friends. Beverly was one of those 6th grade teammates. The lunch ladies always got Beverly and I mixed up. I am not sure how Beverly felt about that, but I was thrilled! You see, she was MUCH younger, MUCH prettier, MUCH smaller, and as many of you know... MUCH sweeter. What a compliment for someone to think I might be Beverly! If I don't turn over a "new leaf" this year I never will, because sweet Beverly has really made an impact on me. Such a warrior against that cancer, with no complaints and always a smile, always gracefully asking how I was doing or about my family. I am feeling blessed today, blessed to have been a part of such a life of selflessness, part of those happy days when we laughed, and we cried, and we learned to love one another. A team of teachers working together. I will never forget you Beverly. Thanks for being a great example of a life well lived.
