Second graders at VES getting ready to dig their way out of snow

Students in the classroom of teacher Haylee Reeves at Vilonia Elementary School cut open a persimmon (with the help of the lunch ladies) this week to discover a spoon inside.

"According to folks tales, it means we are going to have to dig our way out of snow," Mrs Reeves told the class. If there had been a fork, she said, some believe winter will be mild. A knife is believed to mean it is going to be "so cold, it will cut like a knife."

The students cheered at the mention of a snowy winter. After reading a story with a persimmon mentioned in it, a student brought one in for the experiment.
