From the desk of Ronnie Simmons, Freshman Academy principal:
The entire student body of Vilonia Freshman Academy will be touring the campus of Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Wednesday, November 9. We will be loading up all 248 students as well as our teachers to make the short trip. Our plan is to learn what the local colleges have to offer. One of our school goals, this year, is to expose our students to the various college and career opportunities, they have, at their disposal. Many times, students and parents tend to procrastinate and wait until the junior or senior year to begin looking at the possibilities for post-high school education.
For a large percentage of our student body, this will be the first time they have ever stepped onto a college campus. And likewise, many of them will be first generation college students. Our hope is that Vilonia Freshman Academy students will understand that higher education is a real possibility in their lives. We will continue to encourage our students to investigate what is required for them to not only attend college or technical training after school, but to also be able to make it a financial reality. We, also, want to teach them the necessary skills to be successful academically once they begin this next journey. We plan to visit a two-year college in the spring to show our students the diversity of opportunities available for them to further their education after high school.
