Eighth grade literacy students, Friday, presented their poems during an event referred to as Slam Poetry. Coach Joe Bryant led the event which was held all day in the VMS library with five winning students at the end of the day. Students took turns delivering their poetry. Some had comedic lines while others were dramatic messages. Some were thoughts for others while some pertained to themselves. Some rhymed—some didn’t. Some were written. Some delivery was improv and a few used rap to communicate their message. There were poems about a variety of subjects from bad grades to not liking poetry to soccer. In one poem regarding suicidal thoughts, a girl read her handwritten work ending with, “your life is not a film, don’t end it.” Some of the students appeared calm while others were visibly nervous.
