Nine Vilonia High School members of the DECA organization are making plans, along with sponsor Deborah Mauldin to compete at the International Career Development Conference national finals in Nashville, Tennessee where they will compete with students from around the world.
The students are currently raising money allowing them to attend. Advisor Deborah Mauldin, Vilonia High School DECA, made a presentation at the Vilonia Board of Education meeting Monday night saying that she had 12 who qualified, at the state level, to go but three had conflicts preventing them from attending the international conference set for April 23-26.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the students,” Mauldin said. “I am so proud of them. Our students know how to present themselves and they came across very professional (at state competition).”
The cost for conference fees, Mauldin said, is about $105 per person which does not include hotel expenses or food. The organization will take a Vilonia bus cutting down on some expense. The students, Mauldin said, hope to raise about $5,000.
The students are selling smoked pork butts from Cypress Valley for $25 each and the money must be turned in by Friday, April 15, and they will be delivered on April 20. If you would like to purchase one, you may contact any DECA member or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Last year, Mauldin said four students qualified. At the national finals, they will compete in business scenarios with subject matter such as principles of finance, team decisions and hospitality services.
DECA is an international association of high school and college students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service.
