Two boys were memorialized Wednesday, April 27, the two-year anniversary, of the EF-4 tornado that hit Vilonia killing 16 people.
Nine-year-old Cameron and seven-year-old Tyler Smith, students at Vilonia Primary School, were killed while taking shelter at their house. The boys’ mother, April, and their father, Daniel, also sustained life threatening injuries but recovered.
The boys were honored by their classmates with the placing of two “Buddy benches” on the school’s playground.
The handprints of Tyler and Cameron's classmates and teachers from two years ago were placed on two benches. The more than just a place to sit, said teacher Mandy Cameron, who coordinated the event.
Mrs. Cameron, brought Cameron and Tyler's classmates from that year together again. Students, who are feeling a bit lonely, may also sit on the benches to let their peers know their feelings, she said. The hope is that other students on the playground will then notice and extend friendship.
The Conway Lowe's donated all the supplies for the benches.
