Melissa Gasaway has been named as the Vilonia Teacher of the Year.
The announcement was made at the June meeting of the Vilonia Board of Education. Also recognized were nominees Kirsten Pittman and Brooke Jones. Gasaway is a first grade teacher at Vilonia Primary School.
In other business, the board:
--Approve the renewal of property and fleet insurance with the Arkansas Insurance Department Risk Management Division at a cost of $39,257 for fleet insurance and property insurance at $113,354.66
--Approved technology purchases including 48 Dell OptiPlex 7040 desktop computers with monitors from White River Services to be at the Primary School for $42,764.13 and 28 Smart Board displays and projectors from Pirano Consulting for $146,775.90; a District Wireless AP upgrade with Cisco Meraki Wireless Access Points from Howard Technologies for $189,693.42. It was said that E-rate will cover 70 percent of that cost ($132,785) and the district will pay 30 percent of the cost ($56,908).
--Approved the purchase of 59 bus cameras and installation from RTyler Technologies at a cost of $17,910. Also, approved the purchase of furniture for the Frank Mitchell Intermediate School and safe room including desks, tables, and chairs from Cousin’s Office Furniture for $17,449.06. Also, furniture/marker boards for Vilonia High School and magnetic marker boards, tables, chairs from Cousin’s Office Furniture costing $33,628.78; four Chromebook carts and laptops – purchased from White River Services for $40,006.88 to be paid with AR Recognition funds and activity funds.
--Approved the purchase of band instruments including 26 Jupiter flutes and 14 Yamaha Alto saxophones from Arkansas School Band Service for $23,731.04. The purchase, amounting to $21,793.69, will be made with band funds and instrument rental fees, with the remaining $1,937.35 paid by the Band Boosters.
--Approved the purchase of student accident insurance from Dwight Jones Insurance for $24,820.56 with a two year price agreement.
--Approved the contract disclosure for teacher April Burroughs in order to purchase a drone from Farris Burroughs Farms for the EAST program.
-- Approve a tuition increase for the Eagles’ Landing afterschool program. Also revised the Eagles’ Landing/Daycare salary schedule to reflect a beginning hourly wage of $8.50.
--Approved handbooks for the Eagles’ Landing, the high school handbook, the ABC Preschool and the Extended Pre-K, daycare.
--Approved contracts for painting at $15 per hour and website work at $12 per hour for 880 hours.
--Accepted the resignations of Anthony Furman, Pam Stauch, Noemi Netherlain, Patrick Morse, Ciara Adams, Cindy Stage, Charlie Burgess, Samantha Mashburn, Debbie Kelley, Lori Brand, Lauren Parrish, Allison Guerin and John White. Approved the employment of Scott Brian Willhite – teacher, Brooks Sisson – teacher/coach, Sandra Doggett – ESY teacher, Michelle Earnhart – ESY aide, Amber Canitz, ESY aide, Sharon Messer – ESY bus driver, Britney Harmon – ESY teacher, Bruce Battles – teacher, Jeff Osborn –teacher, Lee Ann Anderson – teacher, Donna Woodburn – teacher, Sandy Lyons – summer daycare aide, Ashley Moreno – summer daycare aide, Tammy Foster – summer daycare teacher, Tiffany Rotton – summer daycare teacher, Heather Riggins – ABC summer teacher, Josh Riggins – ABC summer aide, Mandy Thompson – ABC summer aide, Ginger Conover – ABC summer aide, Willa Parker – ABC summer aide, Erika Hall – summer maintenance, Paul Gill – summer maintenance, Cassidy McNespy – Eagles’ Landing worker, Jon Alexander – Eagles’ Landing worker, McKenzie Weaver – Eagles’ Landing worker.
Announcements: Dr. David Stephens, school superintendent, said construction of the intermediate safe room is still on track to be completed by August.
