In a special meeting held Monday night, the Vilonia Board of Education hired Nick Newman as the district’s athletic director replacing Ed Sellers, who is retiring, at the end of the 2016-17 school year.
Sellers was a principal for about 38 years before being named athletic director his last year as high school principal about eight years ago. He also serves as assistant superintendent.
Currently, Newman is assistant principal at Conway High School. A native of Van Buren, he began his education career in 2002 teaching in the Blytheville School District. He moved to Conway about seven years ago from Texarkana. While in Texarkana, he worked in the Arkansas High School and North Heights Junior High. In addition to teaching, he has also coached soccer and served as an assistant football coach.
Newman said he grew up playing football. He played college ball from 1991-95. He and his wife, Stephanie, met while attending UCA and they have been married 20 years. They have three sons, Brady, 17, Noah, 14, and Isak, 11. Brady is a senior and is to attend the University of Arkansas in the fall. The family plans to move to Vilonia where, he said, they hope to become “rooted in the community.”
His career goal, he said, has always been to serve as an athletic director.
“I want to finish my career here,” he offered.
