Vilonia Board of Education special meeting results in student expulsion and new board member

In a special meeting, held Thursday night, the Vilonia Board of Education unanimously approved the expulsion of a student for the remainder of the school year.

The student was not identified nor were the circumstances discussed while in public. Board members sat in silence for about 10 meetings reading through a file prior to imposing the ruling. Dr. David Stephens made the recommendation and referred to “a series of events.”  However, he did not elaborate.

Another matter, the board approved the appointment of Scott Newell, a former board member, to fill the unexpired term of Jake Turner who turned in a letter of resignation at the February meeting.  Turner said he resigned due to personal reasons.
