Vilonia Eagle Preseason Football Report
By VHS student Drake Toll
This Vilonia Eagles Football squad could be monumentally special. That statement is scoffed at by many, but holds significant truth. Head coach Ron Young is going into year number two as the lead Eagle. Coach young has aspirations of finishing #1 atop The 5A West, and with this group it might just be possible. This season the Eagles will boast 20+ seniors who compiled a 19-1 record in two seasons of Junior High football. That class has since gone an average 10-11 in their High School careers, but haven't lost their big time winning mentality. This senior group is anchored by a large set of lineman. Senior Ethan Gassaway leads the way at center with Jordan Britton lining up behind him at quarterback. Britton and the rest of the offensive starters have fit into the split-back veer offense very well. Coach Young speaks very highly of Jordan saying, ’There is no doubt in my mind who our quarterback will be this season, it's 100 percent Jordan Britton.’ Britton ran less than 10 plays last season behind graduated senior Luke Gordon, but has stood out in practice as the Eagles undoubted game one starter. Behind him, Kyle Vines, and Jake Goff, both sophomores, have taken snaps at quarterback. The Eagles also have great depth at running back with seniors Isaiah Rocha, Michael Morris, Cody Mitchell, and Ben Duff leading the way. This team's defense, led by Michael Stout, comes in with a consistent secondary that may be the best the Eagles have seen in recent years. Seniors Triston Milligan, Cody Mitchell, and Colton Bolanhave stood out as leaders of the D-backs this offseason. The Eagle defensive line looks just as solid as the O-line with Christian Gardner, Wyatt Milikin, and Chandler Shear showing major improvements over the offseason. Coach Stout’s defense lost heavy numbers from last season's salty group, but most graduated defensive leaders have been replaced by the feisty incoming senior class. This squad will begin the season attempting to once again finished undefeated in non-conference play. The Eagles will visit Greene County Tech and Pottsville in weeks 1 and 2. Our boys will then face Booneville in their first game back at Phillip D. Weaver just before a meeting with Alma at home in our first conference game. The Eagles will continue conference play at depleted Maumelle; They then host Harrison in week 6 for our annual homecoming. Week 7 the team travels to Farmington then comes home to face 5A Powerhouse Morrilton. The season rounds out with the Eagles taking on Clarksville on the road then coming home to face rival Greenbrier led by former Eagle Jeremy Kendall. The Eagles will see many tough teams this season, but the hardest teams on the schedule all play in Vilonia. With the seniority this squad has, and the home-field advantage in most of the tougher games, this could be a breakout year for Coach Young's Eagles. Do not be surprised when this Vilonia football team puts together a seven or eight win season and makes a deep playoff run.
