Guest speakers at FMIS address side effects and dangers

YOLO "You Only Live Once" was the 2016 National Red Ribbon theme.  During the last week of October, the students at FMIS were honored to have two guest speakers.

Haylee Riding, a senior at Harding University, College of Pharmacy, spoke to the sixth grade students.  Miss Riding discussed prescription medications ("drugs"), why people abuse different prescriptions, side effects and deadly dangers.  She shared this information using a kid-friendly video and PowerPoint.  The students were given a question and answer time and had an opportunity to win frisbees, draw-string backpacks and pencils all donated by Harding University.

Micah Mahan, prevention specialist with Community Service, Inc., spoke to the fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at FMIS as well.  Mr. Mahan discussed the dangers of tobacco use.  He kept the students' attention with Mr. Giant Cigarette, jars of ooey-gooey tar/slime and the unforgettable giant set of tobacco stained teeth.  Mr. Mahan shared a Star Wars themed video made by himself and some local students.  Community Service, Inc. provided red ribbons for our students.
