XC Athletes Ran Strong at Bryant Saturday

The weather did not feel like fall. Heat and humidity replaced the cool, crisp air of last weekend. Heat and humidity are not a runner's friend, but Vilonia Cross Country athletes fought through the obstacles and put on another impressive performance Saturday at Bryant.

Senior Lady Eagles grabbed another 1st place team trophy, their fourth in five meets this season. The five Lady Eagles who scored -- Lauren Millikin (11), Bryn Westby (11), Shelby Duncan (10), Katelyn Ohlde (10), and Laci McKay (11) -- all won individual medals by finishing in the top twenty of all 160 runners in the race. Emma Buck (10) and Evy McKissack (10) were not far behind as displacers.

Senior Eagles were led by JD Otts (12) who finished fourth in a field of 260 runners. Otts was followed by Gabe Goodwin (10), Harrison Janski (10), Daniel Massa (12), and Cade Wagner (9) to round out scoring for the Eagles. They were followed by Jeremiah Lowrance (12) and Clayton Jones (9), who displaced runners from other teams.

Kaci Buck (8) finished second and Carly Eary (8) thirteenth of more than 200 runners to lead the Junior Lady Eagles and earn individual medals. Payton Hawkins (7), Katie McKay (9), and Avery Martin (9) rounded out scoring for the Junior Lady Eagles. Teammates Baelin Shannon (8) and Jaslynn McReynolds (7) came in next to serve as displacers. Buck, Eary, Hawkins, and McReynolds all set new personal records.

Junior Eagles Jones White (8) and Cade Smithhart (8) finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in a field of 288 runners to lead scoring for the Eagles and win individual medals. They were followed in by Keller Willhite (9), Caleb Hogue (7), and Mason Westby (9) to complete scoring for the team. Landon Mannion (7) and Ethan Crawley (9) served as displacers. Crawley, Smithhart, White, and Mannion all set new personal records for the two mile disance, as did teammates Mason Enis (7), Logan Kelley (7), Jake Ledbetter (7), and Clint Slicer (7).

Today's meet was the next to last regular season meet. Next Saturday the Eagles and Lady Eagles will be back in action at the Lake Hamilton Invitational at Hot Springs. The weather forecast looks much more pleasant for running, but competition will be stiff at this meet, which draws teams from every corner of the state and every classification.
