This week in science, Mrs. Hill’s 2nd grade class has been learning about their skulls. They learned that they are made of two parts: the cranium & the jaw. Today, they made their own skull masks!

Congratulations to Vilonia Elementary School for receiving awards from the Office for Education Policy for Outstanding Educational Performance in the 2024-2025 school year! VES ranked in the top 20 schools in Arkansas for Overall Growth - ranking number nine out of 151 elementary schools. They also ranked in the top 10 schools in Arkanas for ELA Growth scores-ranking number two!
OEP awards focus solely on student academic growth. Unlike other indicators of school performance, academic growth is not very correlated with school demographics. This means it is reflective of what students are learning in school, not what challenges they may face due to out of school factors.
Way to go, Vilonia Elementary students, teachers, staff, & parents — your commitment, hard work, and focus on learning are truly making a difference!

SAFE STOPS. STRONGER COMMUNITIES
The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) reports that drivers illegally pass stopped school buses more than 39 million times each year. Each violation represents more than a statistic—it is a moment when a child’s life is in danger. While we’ve seen progress with a 13% reduction in violations this past year, far too many risks remain on our roadways. While this week is National School Bus Safety Week, we want to encourage that EVERY week is focused on school bus safety!

FMIS 6TH GRADERS TAKE THE CLASSROOM OUTDOORS
On Friday, the students in Mrs. Kinley's and Mrs. Steward's Science classes attended class at a local pond. The classes have partnered with the Arkansas Game and Fish Stream Team to explore a wide range of issues regarding the health of their local environment and discover relationships between land and water quality. The students performed hands-on experiements and engaged in scientific investigations. They explored the pond hydrology and biology, tested water quality, and collected data on the physical, chemical, and biological parameters of a local pond. Thank you Mr. John Burden from the Arkansas Game and Fish for coming out and leading the investigations. The site for this outdoor classroom learning took place at the local Weaver Family Park & Community Pond located off Mount Olive. The students will present their findings to the school board and city council in the coming months. They will also return to the pond in the spring to collect more data.
